    The history of sex and gender variation in North America from pre-colonization to the present. Challenges popular perceptions of past sexuality and gender as monolithic and orthodox. Readings pay close attention to how race, class, age, religion, region and status intersected with sexual identities, desires and practices. Readings also break down the binary of private versus public, examining how sex and gender operated in state formation and the creation of social hierarchies
